Isabel Marant is a French fashion designer known for her creativity, innovation and vision.
An entrepreneur women, she won in 2008 a lawsuit agains Naf Naf for the plagiarism of one of her dresses. Now, she is involved in a similar scandal, but on the other side.
Isabel Marant is being accused for having plagiarized the embroidery and design of the Tlahuitoltepec shirt, which is part of the mixe community’s identity, from Oaxaca, Mexico. According to Vogue, Isabel Marant doesn’t claim that she designed the shirt, but the Mexican press doesn’t agree.
To complicate even more the situation, Antik Batik, another French brand, laid claim to the design, a cultural treasure from a community that has worn it over their skin for over 300 years. Now they’re being forced to pay royalties. The community has no access to funds to fight this cause, which makes this company a despicable thief of the mixe patrimony.
Such pitiful acts should be punished by society and the fashion community, which is why, there is a change.org petition to protect native designs that you can sign and share. And also, you can choose not to buy any product from these “innovative” brands until an ethical agreement is reached.

Wow I read about this earlier. What a shame- instead of supporting and promoting the indigenous’ craft by working together, the brands are robbing them of their creations. Thanks for bringing awareness to this matter.

Geez, I had no idea these designs were actually ones long worn by ethnic communities. These are some of my favorites ones too. Makes me open my eyes more. Thanks

Wow! Those are really similar. But I’m not surprised. Isabel Marant is not the first designer to take inspiration from a culture and sold it for very expensive price 🙂

Wow, that is so rude: robbing something and then selling it for such a high price! People have seriously lost their minds trying to earn money!
Great post!

This is a great post, really insightful! I think its right to protect native designs such as these. Designers can’t copy these designs and release them as their own. I bet it must be awful for the communities when they realise that their heritage is being replicated and designers are making millions from their culture. Great post!

Thank you for sharing this post – I hadn’t read about this specific case yet, but I must admit that I’ve seen similar scandals pass along way too often… Horrible how so many fashion companies copy from others…
