Now that Netflix launched «The Last Tsars» (and following the trend of learning about Russia/Soviet Union after the wonderful show Chernobyl) I want to tell you about a documentary series available in the same platform. Get your popcorn ready, this weekend it’s time to travel through the history of one of the most intriguing royal families.
Lucy Worsley goes over the story of the Romanov since its beginnings as heads of the empire in the XVIIth century with Mikhail (Михаил), until their tragic end after Nicholas II’s (Николай) abdication. With curiosity, sense of humor and youth, but with the knowledge of her long résumé as Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to History and to Heritage, a PhD and a list of books she has written. She visits the most emblematic places of the three-hundred-year history of the dynasty, analyzing the characters of those who ruled the largest country in the world, with its diversities and complexities of the time.
The Romanov family, with its origins on the city of Kostroma, had no wish of power, yet they end up building the longest and most powerful dynasty. Their monarchy reached levels of control and absolutism like no other in the world. However, progress didn’t help the peasants and working classes, which lived in poverty and awful labor conditions, without any possibility of finding better opportunities. Finally, the people couldn’t stand it any longer, and overthrew the family that never relinquished power.
Their fall shook the entire world, allowing the communist regime its first raise to power and ending with the violent death of the Tsar, his wife and children isolated in Ipatiev’s house in Yekaterinburg (a city that received its name in honor of another Romanov monarch: Catherine the Great.)

Definitely going to get the popcorn ready for this one. I love learning about the The Romanov family. I enjoyed the season of the Romanovs and it was my first introduction to the family. I am currently just finishing with JFK: The Making of a President. Another very interesting family.

Sounds interesting. I rarely watch many true-to-life historical documentaries because I never seem to have the time, but this weekend I am spending time indoors instead so will have to see what Netflix comes up with 🙂

I love love love watching historical documentaries so this one is definitely going on my list!! I enjoy watching all kind of documentaries, especially about the Middle Ages, the world wars and then those covering topics like medicine, social constructs (e.g. toxic masculinity), mental health etc. Also, a bit random, but I am currently learning Spanish so blog posts like yours that are written in two languages are such a big help!! xxx
