Me encanta la Navidad, es mi festividad favorita. Pero tengo que confesar que hace unas semanas dejé todos los grupos de decoración en los que estaba en Facebook. Desde octubre empezaba a llenarse mi feed de casas exageradamente llenas de esferas, moños, y una indescriptible cantidad de objetos brillantes e inservibles. Sin mencionar los árboles llenos de superhéroes, Disney, y otras irrelevancias.
No es que no respete a quienes tienen gustos distintos a los míos. Es que llaman “espíritu navideño” a llenarse de basura. Estoy de acuerdo con una versión un tanto ecuménica de la Navidad, no todos compartimos la misma creencia, y de todas formas es bello reunirnos y festejar alrededor de algo bueno. Pero el consumismo y la exageración no se pueden llamar espíritu navideño.
Eso no quiere decir dejar de disfrutar con la comida característica de la temporada, los villancicos que no hablan de fe, abandonar el ugly Christmas sweater. Si son cosas que te hacen feliz ¡adelante! Pero eso solo rodea la fiesta, no la hace.
La Navidad es una fiesta cristiana, en que celebramos la venida del Hijo de Dios para redimirnos. El que Dios haya querido asumir nuestra naturaleza humana, humillarse para tomar nuestras penas hasta la muerte, nacer y vivir en la pobreza material, pero en la riqueza mística. Es un acto de amor puro y quienes seguimos esta fe nos alegramos en ello.
¿Qué significa entonces el espíritu navideño, para creyentes o no creyentes? Festejar el amor infinito, la sencillez y la pobreza. Es la unión con los que amamos, la apertura con los que sufren, la generosidad con quienes nos necesitan. Prudencia para volver a estar juntos. Fiesta en nuestra mesa por la dicha.
Decoración, ¿por qué no? Pero sin perder el sentido, que este año nos hace más falta que nunca.

Christmas is such a commercial event, I went to school with a muslim girl whose family still celebrated Christmas! It felt odd at the time, but I guess they probably did it so the kids didn’t miss out when everyone else they knew were receiving gifts etc. I’m not the biggest fan of it because it’s too commercial in my eyes, but it does bring a lot of people joy x

Christmas should definitely not be about the gifts! I love the gifts I received this year, but I would’ve given up everything to spend it with my family I couldn’t see because of the pandemic. I hope you had a wonderful holiday ❤

I love Christmas too but Covid really changed it for me this year. The excitement just wasn’t there. Hopefully, this year will be so much more amazing x
